What is Ownr?
Ownr is a Canadian platform, backed by RBC Ventures, that lets you register a sole proprietorship or incorporate a company entirely online — no lawyer's office, no weeks of waiting. You answer a guided set of questions, and Ownr files the paperwork with the government for you.
For incorporations it files the same Articles of Incorporation a lawyer would, so your corporation is fully legally valid. You also get a name registration, share issuances and a digital minute book to keep your corporate records in one place. For a sole proprietorship, it handles the name search, the registration and your business number — the whole thing, in minutes.
I'm a systems person, so I love that Ownr turns a genuinely confusing, paperwork-heavy task into a clean checkout flow. It's the tool I recommend to BC founders who want to get registered properly and move on to actually running the business — and it pairs naturally with the rest of the setup in my how to start a business in BC guide.
Who it's a great fit for
- New founders in BC, Alberta or Ontario registering a sole proprietorship or incorporating
- Anyone who wants a standard, straightforward structure done quickly and affordably
- Owners who want their minute book, filings and legal documents managed in one place
Who might want a lawyer instead
- Complex share structures, multiple classes, or bringing on investors
- Family trusts, holding companies or tax-planning setups that need tailored advice
Pricing & the discount
What Ownr costs, and how the 15% works.
Ownr's fees are a fraction of a lawyer's, and my partner link takes 15% off them — automatically, with no promo code to remember.
Ownr sets its own pricing and these figures are current as of 2026, so check Ownr for the latest. Prices are in CAD and government filing fees are included. The 15% applies to Ownr's fees through the partner link, and the RBC cash back is a separate offer you claim from your Ownr dashboard after opening an eligible RBC business account (typically within 60 days, kept open about a year).
My honest take
What I love, and what to know going in.
What I love
- RBC-backed and fully legal. Ownr files the same Articles of Incorporation a lawyer would, so your company is legally valid.
- Fast and genuinely simple. A guided flow turns weeks of paperwork into minutes — no lawyer's office required.
- Far cheaper than a lawyer. Incorporation can cost a fraction of the $1,000–$2,000+ a lawyer might charge.
- Everything in one place. Digital minute book, legal templates and government filings live in your dashboard.
- The RBC cash-back perk can offset most — or all — of your registration cost.
What to know
- Built for standard structures. Complex share classes, family trusts or tax planning still need a lawyer or accountant.
- No personalized legal advice. You should have a clear idea of how you want things set up before you start.
- Canada-only, and not nationwide. Incorporation covers BC, AB & ON (sole prop also QC) — check availability for your province.
- Ongoing plans are a subscription. The managed plan and minute book renew yearly after your first year.
My rating: 4.7 / 5. For a standard registration or incorporation done quickly and affordably, it's the easiest path I've found for Canadian founders.
Ownr vs a lawyer
How it compares to the traditional route.
For most small businesses with a simple structure, here's how I'd frame the choice between Ownr and hiring a lawyer.
| Ownr | A lawyer | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | ✓ ~$599–$699 to incorporate | Often $1,000–$2,000+ |
| Speed | ✓ Minutes online, days to file | Often weeks |
| Minute book & docs | ✓ Digital, included | Usually billed separately |
| Tailored legal advice | Standard structures only | Full, personalized counsel |
| Complex setups | Not the right tool | Trusts, share classes, planning |
| Best for | Standard sole props & incorporations | Complex or high-stakes structures |
My take: if your structure is straightforward — which it is for most new businesses — Ownr does the same job for a fraction of the cost, and the 15% off plus RBC cash back makes it even easier.

Questions
Ownr discount FAQ.
Is there an Ownr promo code?
There's no code to enter. You get 15% off Ownr's fees automatically when you start through the partner link on this page — for either a sole proprietorship registration or an incorporation. Just click through and the discount is applied for you.
How much does Ownr cost?
Registering a sole proprietorship is about $49 + tax, with government filing fees included. Provincial incorporation runs roughly $599–$699 + tax depending on your province, and includes the government filings, name registration, share issuances and a digital minute book for one year. The 15% partner discount comes off these fees. Prices are in CAD; check Ownr for the current figures.
What is the $300 RBC cash back offer?
After you register or incorporate, you can receive up to $300 back when you open an eligible RBC business bank account (typically within 60 days). If you registered a sole proprietorship, the registration fee can come back in full. You generally keep the account open for about a year, and you claim it from your Ownr dashboard. It's a separate offer from the 15% discount, and the two stack.
Sole proprietorship or incorporation — which should I choose?
A sole proprietorship is the simplest and cheapest to set up, but you carry unlimited personal liability. Incorporation gives you a separate legal entity with liability protection and potential tax advantages, at a higher cost. Many founders start as a sole prop and incorporate later as they grow. It's worth a quick chat with an accountant — and my Start a business in BC guide walks through the trade-offs.
Which provinces does Ownr cover?
Ownr handles incorporation in BC, Alberta and Ontario, and sole proprietorship registration in those provinces plus Quebec. If you're outside these areas, Ownr may not be available yet — check the site for current coverage.
Is Ownr legit?
Yes. Ownr is backed by RBC Ventures and has registered and incorporated tens of thousands of Canadian businesses. For incorporations it files the same Articles of Incorporation with the government that a lawyer would, so your company is fully legally valid. For complex structures — trusts, multiple share classes, tax planning — you should still work with a lawyer or accountant.
